Alfa Romeo said at the concept reveal that the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale would launch sometime before the end of 2022. We now know the date will be in early 2022.
Citing supplier sources, Automotive News (subscription required) reported on Thursday that the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale would miss its previously planned launch in the second half of 2021 and would now arrive early next year.
The reason? It’s reported that the new CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato wants several changes, including an improved performance from the planned plug-in hybrid variant.
Imparato previously headed fellow brand Stellantis Peugeot and only joined Alfa Romeo in January.
Production of the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be handled at the Stellantis plant in Pomigliano d’Arco, Italy. The manufacturer is responsible for the Fiat Panda subcompact crossover but the Tonale will not share the Panda Foundation.
According to Automotive News, the plan is to use the platform found in Jeep’s Compass and Renegade. This means the plug-in hybrid powertrain intended for the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will likely be the version of the setup used in the Jeep.
It consists of an a1.3-liter inline-4 at the front and an electric motor at the rear. Output ranges from 190 to 240 hp, and the 11.4-kilowatt-hour battery provides enough power for an electric range of about 30 miles.
But what about the Stellantis CMP platform that supports a battery-electric powertrain? It is now expected to be used for the twin Alfa Romeo Crossover subcompact with the DS 3 Crossback and Opel Mokka and may offer electric power only.
The 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale, which will compete with the Audi Q3, BMW X2 and Mercedes-Benz GLA, is a key step in Alfa Romeo’s efforts to boost sales, which were less than 20,000 units in the United States last year.
Unfortunately, we will no longer see the previously announced midsize SUV, GTV coupe and 8C supercar in the Alfa Romeo lineup in the future. Plans for the model were scrapped ahead of the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group to form Stellaris.
2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale Preview
The Tonale is Alfa Romeo’s entry into the sub-compact luxury crossover segment, joining an increasingly dense vehicle field. It’s expected to go into production sometime in 2020, and while all we’ve seen so far is just a concept, the final version is expected to be close to a prototype.
The 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale should be placed below the Stelvio crossover in price and size.
The 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale is expected to be available with an eAWD system that uses an electric motor to transmit power to the rear wheels, which is the same system used on the Jeep Renegade. Combined with the 1.3-liter petrol engine, the entire package produces 240 horsepower.
2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will also share most of its platform with Renegade, as both brands are owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
We don’t know exactly which features will go into production when it all starts, but the concept uses a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch center touchscreen.
When it goes on sale, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will compete with the Audi Q3, BMW X1/X2, and Lexus UX. Pricing details have not been announced.

2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale Report
This Italian car manufacturer needs more models. Alfa Romeo’s new CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, believes the Italian manufacturer can do much better in the United States, one of its main global markets.
Despite a 25 percent increase in sales in the first quarter of this year, many things need to be addressed before Alfa Romeo is ready to compete better than its competitors.
Obviously, first and foremost, this car needs more models. Thus, there will be more segmentation of potential buyers.
In this regard, Imparato is impressed with the current lineup of two Alfa models. He described both as “fantastic”.
This was revealed in a recent interview with Automotive News. Imparato acknowledged that the Alfa Romeo manufacturer needed a newer model.
One of them is the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the latest small crossover to come. Although, its launch will be delayed until the summer of 2022.
Because Mparato wants to see a more capable plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The latest news, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is reported to be launched in July 2022. After the launch, the car is scheduled to arrive in the United States in the same year.
Besides the Tonale, Alfa Romeo is currently working on another crossover. It was originally dubbed as Alfa Romeo Brennero.
This high-horsepower car will be smaller in the body than the Alfa Romeo Tonale, although it will be based on the existing PSA eCMP architecture.
The platform allows a pure electric version, and it is believed the model will launch with combustion, hybrid, and EV engines. However, this car may be too small for launch in the United States.
“With fresh new products, as well as quality that matches its German competitors, Alfa Romeo has a better chance of success in the US market,” said Imparato.
Today, despite increasing sales in the first quarter of 2021, the Italian brand ranks 14th out of 15 brands that are considered premium in the US. Only Jaguars are under Alpha.
“We have to improve the quality of our business model in terms of economic performance, product quality, and proper distribution channels,” Imparato said in a recent meeting with media representatives.
After the merger between FCA and PSA, Alfa Romeo will have a “greater opportunity” to grow its business.
Alfa Romeo will have access to new technology. And, will even develop a new generation model, in collaboration with Lancia and DS for a market launch in 2024.
2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale Specs
For the first time, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale was revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in concept form, and images of the production-ready model leaked in October of that year.
It will use the same platform as the Jeep Compass. The plug-in hybrid off-roader variant is powered by a 1.3 liter turbo petrol engine and electric motor, with available outputs of 187bhp and 237bhp. Using an 11.4kWh battery, the electricity-only mileage reaches 30 miles.
The Compass 4xe has been on sale on the left-hand drive market for some time but will not arrive in the UK in the later stages of 2021. Production will shift from India to Alfa Romeo’s plant in Melfi, Italy, this summer.

But now Alfa needs to have a product that lives up to its rich heritage. The US will get Tonale. This delay means it probably won’t reach our shores until the end of 2022. Stellaris says the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be “the first milestone in Alfa Romeo’s future.” In a statement to Reuters, it said, “We want to be in the market with the latest electricity offerings, leveraging Stellantis technology and know-how.
Our team at Pomigliano is working hard to update the production line.” Pomigliano is where 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will congregate, outside of Naples.
Based on the Jeep Compass platform, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be a plug-in hybrid. The powertrain is a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 60 hp electric motor. It gets power from an 11.4 kWh battery. Both 190 hp and 240 hp versions will be available. But the 3008 Peugeot has a bigger engine, more horsepower, and better range.
The 3008 has a 1.6-liter engine driven by an 81 kW motor at the front axle and an 83 kW motor at the rear. The combined power is 300 hp. The range of the battery itself is 37 miles. To complete the comparison the 3008 has lower CO2 emissions. It comes in at 29 grams per km to 41 g/km, while the Compass’s emissions are 44 g/km to 47 g/km.
2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will come at the right time. The compact crossover segment is hot right now. And it can’t be coming soon to Alfa Romeo dealers because the brand only has two models available at the moment. Plus, the Stelvio and Giulia sedans are the only offerings.
They have seen sales decline in Europe and the US. Also, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale is the first all-new Alfa since the Stelvio came out in 2016. So it’s been a pretty dry season for Alfa dealers.
2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale Release Date
The compact crossover will enter the European market in November. Giulia and Stelvio still haven’t lived up to Alfa Romeo’s expectations. Especially when you consider the $1 billion that parent company FCA has spent engineering the Giorgio platform.
Following the demise of the Giuletta model, and the imminent 4C, the legendary Italian brand desperately needed new players to compete at the top with the German manufacturer.
For this reason, there is a lot of hope placed on the shoulders of the Alfa Romeo Tonale. And, it can also be said that the compact crossover is highly anticipated.
Previewed in concept form, almost two years ago, the new Alfa Romeo model was rumored to be getting closer. We hear the official launch of the production form will take place in September.
Citing internal sources, Motor.es claims that the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will go on sale across Europe in November, with early adopters getting a limited Launch Edition.
The report goes on to say that Alfa Romeo dealerships will begin showcasing the Tonale from February 2022, and the crossover will inherit much of the 2019 concept design.
It is believed that about 90 percent of the showcar’s appearance has been retained, with the most significant changes being the larger headlights and side mirrors.
In fact, images of the pre-production unit surfaced in October 2019, showing the road-going Tonale model in its (almost) final form.
We shouldn’t have high hopes for the Quadrifoglio trim as local reports suggest that the performance version is not a priority.
The reason, Alfa Romeo is worried that the version will not attract enough buyers.
The 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale allegedly borrows the engine from the Jeep Renegade and will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that is rated at around 250 horsepower.
Alfa Romeo Tonale is not the only new crossover on the agenda of the Pizza Country brand.
Reportedly, another subcompact model will be named the Brennero, expected to arrive in 2022. He will be the sister model of the next-gen Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade.
