2024 Acura TLX: New Acura TLX Premium Sport Sedan Exclusive Review

The Acura TLX Pushes The Limits of Performance, Tech, and Design

2024 Acura TLX is an SUV that has the interior capacity and performance of a medium-sized vehicle at a compact price. The Acura TLX comes with a range of standard TLX features that have contributed to the vehicle’s value proposition.

Even the base 2024 TLX comes with adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, and heated seats. The New TLX is also a natural stepping stone for new SUV users who want a more premium vehicle than the top Honda Accord.

We are confident that Acura will give the 2024 Acura TLX a refresh to revive consumer interest. Although until now Acura has not made an official announcement. However, 2024 will be the fourth year of production for this TLX generation.

The 2024 Acura TLX Exterior design will also be revised and it is expected that there will be significant differences from before with new bumper designs, lighting, grille, and alloy wheels. We also hope that Acura can revise the infotainment system’s hideous touchpad controller.

2024 Acura TLX Review

2024 Acura TLX Honda’s commitment to going all-electric by 2040 includes the launch of the Acura electric SUV in 2024 as the 2024 Acura TLX model year. This week American Honda outlined its sales target through 2040, during which it aims to have 100% of its vehicle sales comprised of battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles.

A press release from American Honda mentions the development of two “upcoming large-sized EV models using GM Ultium batteries”, one for the Honda brand and the other for Acura.

Both will be introduced to the North American market as model year 2024 vehicles.

According to The Drive, the 2024 Acura TLX has confirmed that the Acura EV model will not only use GM’s Ultium batteries but will also be manufactured by GM, likely at its Spring Hill Assembly plant in Tennessee.

This is the same factory that will build Cadillac’s upcoming Lyriq electric SUV.

The 2024 Acura TLX is a four-door entry-level luxury sedan sold by Acura, Honda’s luxury division. The TLX is the successor to the TL and TSX models. The Acura TLX was first shown at Acura’s Los Angeles Design Studio as the TLX Prototype, a sedan designed to replace the TL and TSX sedans.

The production version was launched in April at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, and sales began in August, with the TLX going into production in July in Marysville, Ohio, United States.

The lineup was basic, Technology, A-Spec, advanced, and Type S. All but the Type S had a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. Acura’s SH-AWD system is optional.

The 2024 TLX Type S features a unique 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine with SH-AWD as standard equipment. However, TLX also took a step back. The powertrain is a little thirstier and slower than similar machines in its competitors, but the biggest problem is the new touchpad controller, which can often frustrate the infotainment system.

The 2024 Acura TLX is a premium compact sedan that competes with a variety of potential competitors, including the BMW 3 Series, Genesis G70, Lexus IS, Audi A4, Volvo S60, and Kia Stinger. With a standard 272 horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive (AWD) available, the TLX has plenty of performance for every type of driving scenario – and added grip if your road is slippery.

Technically, Acura calls its AWD system Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) which, we admit, sounds like something Sonic the Hedgehog might fit into its daily driver. The good news is that despite the name of the male racer, this system delivers, ahem, super handling and delivers the TLX’s quiet and excellent balance.

Fresh from a total redesign for the 2021 model year, we expect nothing more than minor changes to the 2024 Acura TLX color and trim options.

With an aggressive base price and a strong lineup of standard features, the TLX represents surprising value among similar-sized luxury sedans. Equipped with every TLX are a 10.2-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather seating surfaces, heated mirrors, heated front seats, Wi-Fi, and a moonroof. A full range of active safety features and driver assistance are also standard fares.

A note of caution: The infotainment system is controlled via the touchpad and has a definite learning curve. Some of its rival luxury sedans also provide more rear legroom than you’ll get on the TLX, though we think there’s plenty of room for adults – as long as everyone in them isn’t a starting center in the NBA.

To up the Acura TLX’s game significantly, you might want to consider the Type S with a standard 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that sends 355 horsepower to all four wheels thanks to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

It’s a fast and very fun luxury sports sedan that also comes with stronger Brembo brakes, a sportier suspension setup, and sleek 20-inch alloy wheels.

After several years of fading into the background against so many strong competitors, this latest generation of TLX is sure to get the spotlight.

2024 Acura TLX Interior

Inside, the 2024 TLX has an expressive design that accentuates its sporty character. These include attractive analog instruments and a rotary drive mode selector that prominently sits in the center of the instrument cluster. Fortified by Acura’s outstanding build qualities, the TLX features improved cabinet materials than its predecessor, including open porous wood and genuine aluminum.

While the sedan appears wide from side to side, the rear seat feels smaller than some rivals in this class. The front seats are highly maneuverable and the driver can see well ahead. The Acura 2024 TLX also offers a myriad of interior colors, different leather seats, and desirable features.

The latter includes a large 10.5-inch head-up display and customizable ambient lighting settings, each named after an iconic driving destination and race track. Each TLX features a 10.2-inch infotainment system which is controlled primarily via the touchpad on the center console.

The TLX comes standard with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Wi-Fi interest areas. Those who want the coolest ELS sound system and wireless charging pad should opt for the Advance package.

Cargo Room and Interior Room

We’d be surprised if the TLX’s dimensions changed for the 2024 model year. The Acura has a generous trunk, but the front and rear accommodations are only average.

Technology

Standard on the second-generation TLX is a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto navigated via a complex touchpad controller. This system could continue for 2024, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Acura introduced Honda’s 12.3-inch Google integrated system debuting in the top trim levels of the 2023 Accord. Expect A-Spec trim and higher to feature Acura’s premium ELS audio system.

New Honda e: Architecture EV Platform

Following the Ultium-powered EV, Honda plans to develop additional EV models using their own EV platform called e: Architecture. Honda hopes to launch the e: Architecture EV model in the second half of the 2020s, first in North America and then in other global markets.

Productivity and Effectiveness

For the 2024 model year, Acura will likely not introduce a new powertrain. The new TLX will likely retain the 2.0-liter turbo-four in the standard model and the 3.0-liter turbo-V6 in the TLX Type S trim. Most examples will likely use the four-cylinder engine, which produces 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The Type S’s V-6 engine produces 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque in the 2023 model, which is not expected to change. Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, and while the four-cylinder model offers FWD or AWD, the Type S is AWD only.

The four-cylinder TLX has reached 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds, while the six-cylinder Type S achieves the same feat in 5.1 seconds. Expect about 22/30 mpg city/highway from the standard TLX and around 19/25 mpg from the Type S.

2024 Acura TLX Engine

A 272 horsepower four-cylinder engine is standard on the TLX, while a 355 horsepower V6 is available, with a 10-speed programmed transmission. Neither engine wants power, so buyers can opt for the base engine and be very happy. The transmission is responsive but takes a while to shift when in manual mode.

The 2024 Acura TLX gets an EPA estimate of 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel drive and base engine models. This estimate is average among mid-size luxury cars. All-wheel drive models drop to 21/29 mpg city/highway, and V6-powered models see those estimates drop further to around 19/25 mpg.

2024 Acura TLX Security

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Acura TLX its Top Safety Pick+, the organization’s highest award. The TLX received the highest Good rating in all six crash safety tests and for how well its headlights illuminate the road ahead. IIHS uses an alternative scale to assess collision avoidance features. The Acura TLX earned Superior’s highest rating for its standard frontal collision avoidance system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2024 TLX an overall safety rating of five out of five in front crash, side hit, and rollover tests, with five stars.

Available safety features of the 2024 Acura TLX include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, departure warning, parking sensors, lane keeping assistance, road sign recognition, rearview camera, collision warning, high beam, rain sensor windshield wipers, rear traffic warning, perimeter parking camera system, and head-up display.

Features for Safety

The 2023 TLX which received the 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, is unlikely to change for the 2024 model year. Acura has equipped each model with plenty of driver assistance features, far more than most other luxury brands. Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beam should transfer, and blind-point monitors and parking sensors will likely come standard on all but base models.

2024 Acura TLX Price

Look for the standard front-wheel drive (FWD) version of the Acura TLX 2024 starting at around $38,000.

With an impressive list of standard comfort and safety features, it’s a solid deal compared to rival sedans from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and Infiniti.

At this level, the powertrain consists of a 272-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder coupled to a 10-speed automatic. If you plan to add all-wheel drive (AWD), budget for paying around $2,200 extra.

Unfortunately, the added power and speed of the V6-motivated TLX Type S demands a sizeable price spike.

While we love the added vibrancy of this engine, the starting price tag of around $53,000 could have Acura buyers opting to stick with the much cheaper 4-cylinder turbo.

Verdict

The 2024 Acura TLX is poised to make a grand entrance into the luxury sedan market. With its stunning design, refined interior, powerful engine, and advanced features, this sedan is set to redefine the standard of excellence in its segment. Acura has once again demonstrated its commitment to delivering an extraordinary driving experience, combining luxury and performance seamlessly.
