2023 Acura MDX Review, Acura is updating its small line of cars and SUVs. Among them is the three-line MDX, whose recent overhaul brings a lot of goodies. This SUV takes the dashing styling of the compact RDX SUV and TLX sedan, and the cabin offers luxurious materials and features worthy of the premium Acura badge.
The basic powertrain for the front driver consists of a 290 hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine and a 10-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive is available. But opt for the performance-oriented Type S model and you’ll get a 355-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and standard all-wheel drive.

The 2023 Acura MDX Review driver-focused brand reboot got off to a strong start with the exciting TLX 2021 sports sedan introduced late last year. But to be successful in today’s marketplace, a brand recipe for tackling greatness also has to work on a large three-line utility vehicle. Fortunately for the redesigned MDX 2022 – whose predecessor sold more than the TLX by roughly two to one in recent years – has done well.
This fourth-generation athletic model is surprising given that it is about two inches longer and wider than before and has a longer wheelbase of 2.8 inches. Partially compensating for the larger footprint is the new platform, which is stiffer and features a switch from the strut front suspension to a control arm arrangement that sharpens its behavior and handling.
Combined with direct but not very fast variable-assist steering the result is a very positive impression of the front end when turning corners, regardless of the drive mode chosen.
Revised multilink rear suspension and adaptive damping add to its nimble quietness, as does the torque vector rear differential in the version equipped with the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. The base model gets 19-inch wheels, but most of the trim wears 20s shoes with 255 / 50R-20 Bridgestone Alenza Sports A / S tires for all seasons.
Ride quality on large rollers is fast but never rough. While road isolation is not as comprehensive as, say, the Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90, the MDX’s response was unexpected for a seven-seater vehicle that is nearly 200 inches long. The snow cover kept us from learning if the new version increased the 0.83g lateral grip installed by the 2017 MDX all-wheel-drive we last tested.
But our SH-AWD A-spec test vehicle stopped at 70 mph in 170 feet, which is on par for this segment and 15 feet shorter than its predecessor.
Power comes from the familiar, husky-sounding Acura 3.5-liter V-6 that’s good for the 290 horses, now mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, up from the previous nine. Tooth exchange is smooth and well-coordinated. But given the sportier character of the MDX, we wanted a faster response from the 10-speed pedal on the steering wheel.
At 4,514 pounds, our test vehicle weighed less than 300 pounds more than its predecessor, with the puff contributing about half a second to acceleration time. A speed of up to 60 mph now takes 6.4 seconds and a quarter-mile passes in 15.1 seconds at a speed of 93 mph, which feels completely adequate for a family carrier and faster than many everyday three-line SUVs, such as the Kia Telluride and Mazda CX- 9.
Both vehicles took about seven seconds to reach 60 and a few more seconds to complete the quarter-mile.
Despite the added weight of the MDX, the EPA’s fuel economy estimates – 21 mpg combined, 19 city, and 25 roadways for the SH-AWD model – are basically the same as the previous model. However, the picture is less than great in the real world: Our test vehicle averaged 16 mpg full-size as an overall SUV, and only managed 22 mpg on our 75 mph highway test versus 28 mpg for our peer 2017 model year.
The longer hood helps the MDX’s wrinkled bodywork more closely match rear-wheel-drive proportions, even though the engine is still mounted transversely. Inside, drivers will love the standard front sport seats and the smaller diameter, thicker steering wheel. Tech experts will dig into the bright 12.3-inch gauge cluster and infotainment display, although we maintain that, despite some updates, Acura’s touchpad interface is not a well-executed touchscreen replacement.
Aluminum accents and open porous wood trim combine with ambient lighting to give the MDX cabin a rich, high-tech vibe that’s worth the $ 61,675 demand from the top Advance SH-AWD model. Prices start at $ 47,925, up to $ 2,400 from the previous model.
Additional highlights include the available head-up display, a 16-speaker ELS audio system with 710 watts, and a detachable second-row console/center seat that converts the center bench into the captain’s seat. Comfort levels are high in the middle row, although the six-footers may want more legroom when the front seat passengers are not feeling generous.
The rear riders benefit from easier access to the wider third row, which is located higher than the floor, but adults still don’t want to sit there for long. On the utility front, the MDX pulls in up to 5,000 pounds, and its load space takes up 16 cubic feet of stuff behind the third row, 39 with the third row folded, and 71 with both rows folded.
That MDX’s driver-centered evolution has brought about increased versatility is impressive. As was the case with the TLX, Acura will offer a Type S version of the MDX later this year, which will be much more attractive with a 355 hp twin-turbo V-6 and bigger brakes, wheels, and tires. But even in its standard 290-hp form, the MDX reinforces the 2023 Acura MDX Review new direction through higher connections to the road.

The MDX is a mid-size three-line SUV from Acura. Redesigned for 2023, the latest version of MDX gets a sleek exterior style, additional legroom in all three lines, and a long list of technology and interior updates. The MDX has long been one of our most recommended models among the three-line luxury SUVs.
As well as demonstrating the distinctive strengths of its class, the previous generation of MDX offers impressive value for money – something its competitors are unable to say often. With updates to ride quality, interior space, and overall styling, plus a powerful Type S model, the 2023 Acura MDX Review is once again one of the more attractive options for a luxury SUV.
2023 Acura MDX Review seemed to be performing several magic wand moves on top of MDX. Its handles curve confidently but float over the mound like a helium balloon. But behind the miracle, there are several technical improvements. The MDX 2022 is longer, wider, and stiffer than ever, which increases your sense of stability on the road.
Less impressive is the base MDX engine. It’s the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as before and produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The only difference is that instead of a nine-speed automatic transmission, the 2022 model will come with 10 speeds.
The engine is a little sleepy in Normal and Comfortable driving mode but powerful enough in the Sport mode. It’s a competent engine, but tough when you hit the pedals and a little disappointing compared to the turbocharged six-cylinder engine found in rival European SUVs.
The current Sport Hybrid model won’t be back in 2022. But if you want more people propulsion, 2023 Acura MDX Reviewwill offer a new Type S model. It has a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.
The turbo engine will be paired with Acura’s SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system, which is a $ 2,000 option at other trim levels. Add in wider tires and more powerful brakes, and the MDX Type S has to be sporty enough to get the first. It’s coming in the summer of 2021.
2023 Acura MDX Review has increased the MDX interior space in all three lines. There are more legroom and more headroom for the first and third rows. The second-row headroom is pretty much the same, although that’s in large part due to the now-standard panoramic sunroof. The extra lights are worth it, which makes the MDX’s cabin feel more like a sunroom than an SUV.
The seats are soft and supportive, even in the third row. Another benefit of the new chassis is a redesign of the rear suspension which allows for a lower floor in the third row, which equates to more legroom and a more comfortable seating position.
From front to back, wherever you place your hand it will be nicely padded. Short drivers may find that the MDX center console layout leaves the armrests too far back when the seat is farther forward, but in general, the adjustment and seat position is good for comfort and visibility across driver sizes.
The interior of the new MDX is significantly upgraded from a functionality point of view. 2023 Acura MDX Review also enhances luxury intelligence, enhancing the MDX interior with high-end materials such as open porous wood, stainless steel speaker covers, and a host of available seat options. MDX does stack the deck towards the front of the cockpit, with a little flash in the second row. Passengers there get the usual old plastic speaker covers.
Acura joins the trend of offering color for both exteriors and interiors. The Phantom Violet Pearl looks amazing, as does the bright Apex Blue Pearl specifically for the A-Sport trim. The color of the interior is not too flashy, with the usual black and gray, but there are also dark browns, a lovely if impractical beige color, and for the A-Spec, a red-black combination. Combined with wood and metal trim, you can create a realistic look.
New for 2021 is an attractive second-row seating concept that allows to fold or remove the middle seat. This configuration is standard on all MDXs and allows three-width bench seating by default. You can fold down the center seatbacks to create a wide center console with cupholders and additional storage for a captain’s seat-style seat. Or drop everything to leave the curb from the center to the back.
This is a particularly useful feature if you have more than one child seat in place and regularly need access to the third row, and removing the middle seat is easy.
We’ve blamed MDX in the past for its frustrating infotainment system and unintuitive dashboard design. 2023 Acura MDX Review made important interior improvements to the new MDX. There’s a new 12.3-inch center display screen and touchpad controller, plus wireless capabilities for Apple CarPlay integration and Android Auto smartphones. The new infotainment touchpad controller is easier to use than the previous MDX dual-screen setup but takes a lot of practice to operate.
Also new for 2022 is an optional full-color head-up display. Available on models with the Advance Package, the head-up display displays vehicle alerts as well as phone and text message information. It’s a big screen – almost annoying at times – but you’ll find the controls to dim it easily.
More transmission gears usually result in improved fuel economy, but the 2023 Acura MDX Review is actually a little thirstier than the previous model. The front-wheel-drive model with the 3.5 liters V6 gets a combined EPA estimate of 22 mpg (19 cities / 26 roadways), which is a drop of 1 mpg across the board.
The all-wheel-drive model with the 3.5-liter V6 is now at a combined 21 mpg (19 cities / 25 roadways), which also represents a 1 mpg drop. Further hurting the MDX’s eco-credibility is the absence of the Sport Hybrid model, which gets a combined 27 mpg.
2023 Acura MDX Specs
The new MDX uses the same 290-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine as the previous model, but the engine is now mated to a 10-speed, not a nine-speed automatic transmission. Fixed front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive available as an option. The outgoing 2020 MDX also offers a hybrid powertrain, but so far 2023 Acura MDX Review hasn’t shown any intention of hybridizing the 2023 MDX.
The sporty Type S model is powered by a 355 hp 3.0 liter turbocharged V-6 and comes standard with an all-wheel drive. We haven’t driven the Type S yet, but a test drive of our Advance all-wheel-drive model with the standard powertrain revealed incredibly agile handling and excellent acceleration.
2023 Acura MDX Towing Capacity
The Base 2023 MDX offers an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city and highway 26 mpg. Opting for all-wheel drive reduces road ratings by 1 mpg. 2023 Acura MDX A-Spec
If the 2023 Acura MDX Review is a three-line SUV revolution, it may not be treating the driver as an afterthought. The sharper styling, a more upscale cabin, and extra tech touches help justify the ascent of the fourth-generation MDX into the more expensive territory, but Acura still takes its mission statement seriously. The valuable experience behind the wheel cannot be sacrificed, even in the family carrier.
The all-new platform allows 2023 Acura MDX Review designers to demand the long hood, wide-axle dash, and rear-bias cabin their heart desires, and the result is an SUV that is simply stunning from any angle. Wider, longer, with more wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks, the new MDX beautifully embodies the current Acura aesthetic, from its massive grille and narrow headlights to curved sides and sharp.
He appears calm and purposeful and hides his weight well. Parked next to the RDX, this new three-row SUV looks taller and impressive, rather than a limp assent to practicality. 19-inch wheels are standard, with a 20-inch increase in the Tech and A-Spec trim.
Beneath it is the usual battle between the demand for sportiness and the need for comfort that any luxury SUV faces. Acura says it’s the stiffest SUV it’s ever built, with up to 32 percent torsional stiffness, and the old MacPherson strut front suspension doesn’t support the double-wishbone system.
The brakes are bigger, the variable-ratio steering promises less wheel turning, and there’s an improved multi-link rear suspension system with dual load lanes to reduce the hardness of surly asphalt while increasing cargo and third-row space.
2023 Acura MDX Review has brought in a 3.5-liter V6 with 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, now quite unusual among four-cylinder rivals. This is paired with a 10 speed automatic rather than the old 9 speed; paddle-shifters are standard equipment, while a wider range of ratios means a perkier pick-up in first gear. It can also drop up to four ratios at once.
Front-wheel drive is standard, but, understandably, 2023 Acura MDX Review is eager to push the 4th Generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). That’s a $ 2k option over the basic $ 46,900 MDX and $ 51,600 MDX Technology Package, and standard at the $ 57,100 A-Spec and $ 60,650 Advance Package (all plus $ 1,025 destination).
It can push up to 70 percent of engine torque backward and then distribute up to 100 percent to the left or right wheels for the right torque vector.
Despite having six cylinders, Acura says it is confident that the economy is competitive with its inline-4 rival at the same price. Draw at 19 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, or 22 mpg combined from the FWD SUV, or 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, 21 mpg combined for the SH-AWD version.
What is striking about its absence is any kind of electrification. Acura doesn’t have a plug-in or fully electric hybrid version of the MDX, although it doesn’t count something like that on the phone. “Electrification will be an important part of the company’s future direction,” stressed Tom Nguyen, global development leader for MDX 2022, pointing out that “by 2030 two-thirds of our products will be electrified.” For now, your choice is the 2023 Acura MDX Review V6 or another three-line SUV.
Luckily it’s a decent machine. A solid level of strength that doesn’t stingy on a new gearbox, ready to go but without losing courtesy in the process. The Integrated Dynamics System – Acura’s term for “ride mode” – has four presets, Snow, Comfort, Normal, and Sport. Unusually, you can set Comfort or Normal as the default. Individual Mode lets you mix settings for your own recipe, adjusting things like gearbox preferences and steering weight.
Acura’s insistence on driving first makes the MDX 2022 sharper than most of its competitors. It uses the same type of amplitude reactive damper featured on the new TLX, with two circuit sets that promise sports compliance and stability. Of course, if you push the MDX through corners, it will handle flatter and with more agility than you would expect from a 4,500 pound SUV.
Switch to Comfort mode, and there’s no fancy adaptive damping or air suspension to soften things up. Bridgestone’s all-season performance rubber with a 15 percent stiffness increase in the sidewall of my MDX A-Spec test car might not help, but it’s definitely firmer in the ruts and potholes than some of its competitors.
The MDX still misses the side of the dedicated buttons for many of its features, but the result feels a lot more cohesive than it was on the old SUV. Even so, there’s plenty of glossy black plastic and, despite the contrast to the bright red leather on my A-Spec, there’s definitely dust and fingerprints.

We’re excited to see the 2023 Acura MDX Review come back in a way that’s like an incredible combination of luxury, performance, and looks, but don’t be fooled yourself: we want the MDX Type S, then there is good news because it’s such a performance crossover that Japanese luxury brands will actually build.

Unsurprisingly, the 2022 MDX Type S will share the engine with the TLX Type S. Translation: A turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 sits under the hood of the SUV. Acura predicts it will produce the same 355 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque at the time.
The 10-speed automatic grip shifts here – like the TLX Type S – and delivers power to all four wheels. Or, in Acura’s language, it’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive.
2023 Acura MDX Review The racer is seen outside
I’ll be very blunt: the MDX Type S looks absolutely gorgeous in this yellow. That’s the only photo Acura has shared of the exterior, but man, it looks really good. If you’re not into a performance SUV, the same yellow color will be available with the TLX Type S as well.
After all, we can only see the rear of the SUV, but the appearance is just right enough to convey the fact that this is no ordinary MDX.
The quad exhaust outlet sits in the corner of the bumper and a simple rear splitter sits beneath the finish in what appears to be gloss black. Other gloss black elements touch the rear bumper and side trim.
The Acura fits into a standard set of 21-inch wheels wrapped in 275 series tires, which will help the SUV handle any twists and turns the driver is throwing at the time.
2023 Acura MDX Review Leisure equipment and technology in it
The2023 Acura MDX Review cockpit is a big step forward from the upcoming SUV, and the Type S benefits from all of the same material and design options as the standard model. Some of the features do pair up with the lightest trim of all MDX trims.
Acura includes a nine-way massage front seat to keep you cool like a cucumber while carving corners. Also standard is the ELS Studio 3D Signature Edition premium audio system.
It boasts 25 speakers with 1,000 watts of power, so when you want to give the V6’s twin-turbo sound a break, you can turn on what should be a boss stereo system.
2023 Acura MDX Review Availability, prices, and more
Acura says it will have a lot more to share about the MDX Type S in the coming months and we have a lot more time before it launches. The first SUVs should land at dealerships in the summer of 2021. Look for prices to land at least in the upper $ 50,000 range, judging by the costs of the rest of the MDX family.

By the way, switch to Sport mode with the push-button transmission set to “S” and everything makes more sense. The SH-AWD definitely shines in a performance car like the NSX, but it also proves its worth in much larger metals like MDX. Imagine enough stability even on snowy back roads with enough cornering force to eliminate the poor passenger’s lunch.
That would be really embarrassing because the cabin is one step away. In fact, everyone from the old MDX will fly away. The confusing dual-screen infotainment systems and a dashboard reminiscent of the Iron Man code snippet are now gone.
Instead, it is a deliberately authentic choice of materials: think real aluminum, real open-pore wood, and genuine Milanese leather with contrast stitching.
The all-new 2023 Acura MDX Review has officially debuted with the bold and more athletic styling of its predecessor. As Acura’s flagship SUV, the MDX has an important role to fill, but we can’t help but notice that the hybrid version is not mentioned. Will there be a successor to the MDX Sport Hybrid? Apparently not.

The basic 3.5-liter direct-injection V6, with a speed of 290 hp and 267 lb-ft rotation, has an EPA rating of 19/26/22 mpg for the FWD model and 19/25/21 for the AWD version.
The powertrain Sport Hybrid that comes out consists of a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V6 paired with three electric motors; one connected to the engine to provide power to the front wheels and one motor to each rear wheel for the torque vector.

The Slim Technology Package will start at $ 49,500 for the basic 290 hp 3.5L V6 and FWD configuration.
